Andaz Mayakoba Hotel Site Inspection Report

Andaz Mayakoba

Jessica and I were very fortunate to join Brownell Travel and Hyatt on a recent Educational trip to Andaz Mayakoba, located in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Andaz Mayakoba only just recently opened in early 2017, and we couldn’t be more pleased with the new addition to the Mayakoba Complex!

Our easy, 30-minute drive from the Cancun airport was made extra comfortable with cold towels and cervezas on hand for the ride. On arrival, the check-in process was more about the ritual than the paperwork. Our stay began in the “Sanctuary” (a “barrier free” space that served as a welcoming version of a hotel lobby) with more treats and a short orientation to the property. Then, to mark our arrival, we were asked to make a wish and toss a little gem into the water feature. Right away, you get a sense of the colorful whimsy that permeates in every experience at the Andaz Mayakoba.

Andaz Mayakoba Arrival Experience

The arrival experience at Andaz Mayakoba puts you in a vacation mood!

Throughout our entire stay, the staff was warm and welcoming and we could truly tell that all Andaz employees love the resort, their team, and the guests! Andaz Mayakoba stays true to the Andaz brand, with artistic designs and colorful accents throughout the resort, following a Mayan themed décor of local history. Featuring 214 guestrooms, including 41 suites, the resort boasts the highest number of beachside accommodations of all four Mayakoba resorts. Our visit was during a weekend of 83% capacity, but we never felt it! Guests were seen happily relaxing, there was never any anxiety about having to compete for services or attention, and it never felt crowded.

As with the other Mayakoba hotels, the Andaz Mayakoba is divided into Lagoon Side and Beach Side rooms and suites, both with exceptional views. There are two pool areas on property, again one on the Lagoon Side of the resort and a second on the Beach Side of the resort, just a minute’s walk to the beach. The beach is very impressive with soft, white sand, and was recently refurbished for the resort guests. We highly recommend booking an Oceanfront Studio, where you can (quite literally) step out of your private plunge pool onto the sand.

We definitely recommend skipping the small Standard room and booking into a Deluxe category. At that level, the rooms share a similar footprint and the upgrade really comes down to location; this is where it really helps that Andaz Mayakoba has so many beach-side rooms. As opposed to its neighbors that reserve the beach side for the higher priced suites, Andaz is making the beach side accessible to more guests. Bathrooms are large with excellent natural light, but only a few of the higher-level suites have bathtubs; most of the rooms only have showers. There are plenty of rooms with 2 double beds and connecting options make this a nice, flexible option for families. Also a great draw for families, the kids club is complimentary!

Andaz Mayakoba offers four restaurants on property, each offering their own twist on local cuisine. Menus feature the tacos and guacamole you would expect, but we were pleasantly surprised to see other menu items like a delicious pepita mole, grilled octopus, snail ceviche, and the most incredible Castakan (fried pork belly). Casa Amate, the most formal of the dining options, is meant to replicate the flow of a dinner party at a friends home… a very well traveled friend who hires a kitchen crew with an ecclectic and internationally inspired skillset and selection of recipes!  While Mayakoba guests can enjoy dining, spa, and activities at any of the four Mayakoba resorts, we definitely recommend you try each of the restaurants Andaz offers first!

Of course, a relaxing beach vacation is not complete without a visit to the spa! Naum Spa, located on the Lagoon Side of the resort, offers it’s guests a very unique experience. Rather than providing a menu of specific treatments, they offer massage, facial, and body rituals, which you can schedule for 75, 90, or 120-minute appointments. Each ritual is completely customizable for your needs and preferences, and takes place in a private treatment room.
